well i successfully attended oktoberfest and it was so much fun. i've compiled a list of top and low fives from the weekend!
Top Fives
1. it was so incredibly nice to see some friends from hc who i haven't seen since may! i don't think i realized how much i missed them until i had them with me again! it was truly a feat that we were able to coordinate seeing as 3 took a bus from italy, 2 took a train from france and three of us took a plane from dublin.
2. munich! the picture above is seconds after exiting the metro stop. we all walked out of the dingy tunnel and were suddenly surrounded by this amazing square! complete with people selling flowers, fruit and food. we had fun exploring the city and ended up walking all the way to oktoberfest (burning off the calories from every type of carnival food imaginable)
3. beer tents - we arrived at oktoberfest at the ungodly hour of 9 o'clock and luckily found a table up on the second tier of hofbrau festzelt. it was incredible how many people were crammed in this tent. even more incredible that the "beermaidens" were able to serve everyone in the place in like 30 minutes. this brought on many tentwide toasts and group singing. we just kept repeating "this is our life!" over and over. (notice the lederhosen below!)
4. carnival food - as we already know, i am a big fan of food. oktoberfest presented a wide variety of food kiosks that were a welcome break from all of the pretzels we had been consuming. my favorite were the chocolate covered strawberry kebobs. amazing. we had sausages on rolls for dinner and spencer was lucky enough to get some french fries absolutely slathered in mayo (he had originally asked for saurkraut). also on the food list - gingerbread hearts. jenna and i shared one that appropriately said, "ich liebe dich" (i love you).
5. laughs - i don't think we would have made it through some of our low fives without laughter!
Low Three - these really can't interfere with the top fives at all but they're still worth mentioning :) also i couldn't even come up with 5 so there ya go!
1. tents - thinnest sleeping bag in the world, freezing temperatures, snoring companions, loud drunks stumbling home - not the best combination.
2. s-bahn - although the german s-bahn train worked most of the time, there was a strike friday night so we had to get off of the train and find another way home... see #3
3. cab drivers - after being so rudely kicked off of our train, we hopped in a cab and told the driver we were going to "weisncamp" (apparently that wasn't specific enough because he ended up driving us 20 minutes in the wrong direction and only then did he clarify where we were going.) oh did he make us pay 30 euro? obviously.
overall an absolutely amazing trip. i'm so glad we were able to reunite! now i'm back to reality with 4 classes today and an imminent trip to the grocery store (sigh)
