two posts in one day! making moves people.
so today was my first day of "classes" and it was so different from holy cross i can't even believe it. all of the classes are an hour long but no one shows up for the first 10-15 minutes since people are changing classes..
class one: Saints and Sinners in the Celtic World: the only class that actually happened... the professor didn't talk about the class, he just launched into a discussion of celtic monasteries! it was pretty tedious but i'm hoping it might get more interesting? yeah i don't think so either. i did meet a girl who goes to uw madison in my class though which was so strange. there were also several people over the age of 50 and i'm guessing they were auditing the class. one of the women whipped out a full out black lacy oriental fan after 10 minutes so that was entertaining.
class two: Modernism/Post Modernism (English): i have never been so overwhelmed as walking into this lecture hall that had over 200 students in it. after 10 minutes someone told us that this was actually a "third year induction lecture" and that our class would take place on friday. normal, right?
and then there was class three: Early Modern Lit: this professors didn't even show up which is apparently normal on the first day... what?! it is so strange to be away from the extreme structure at holy cross.
the day was not worth as much worry as i put into it and i even spent some time in the leisure room at the library! also we discovered a subway and starbucks on campus which will be fantastic. we also signed up for the gym which will come in handy since i've been eating more than i'd like to admit
the only downfall was while Mary and I were attempting to find a lecture hall in a new building... We went in the wrong side of this building and were wandering down some floors of offices. next thing we know, we've stepped through this door into a "silent study area" that was a room full of cubicle type things but made out of nice wood. true to its name, this area was absolutely silent. we awkwardly walked through while professors glanced at us and finally made it to the other side of the room. oh, nope, you had to swipe to get out of that door. so we turn around. walk past the people AGAIN and then get to the other door to find that you have to swipe out of that door too! so we were physically trapped in a silent room with no way to swipe out! you'd think that maybe the swipe would be on the outside of the door? anyway this woman walked over and asked if we were stuck (in an accent, of course). we said yes and she asked how we got in there before letting us out. strangest experience EVER.
it was my first time walking home alone from school and being separated from sara and mary in general and it went well! i did see four teenage irish guys (two redheads, ahem, christine) who were carrying open beers down the sidewalk... we've yet to determine the open container law here but so far it seems fairly lax...
on that note, i think the roomies and i are going to go to pub!
miss you guys
